Microbial Desalination Cell for Sustainable Water Treatment: A Critical Review

Abstract In view of increasing threats arising from the shortage fresh water, there is an urgent need to propose sustainable technologies for exploitation unconventional water sources. As a derivative microbial fuel cells (MFCs), desalination cell (MDC) has potential desalinating saline/brackish while simultaneously generating electricity, as well treating wastewater. Therefore, it worth investigating its practicability technology. This review article first introduces fundamentals and annual trends MDCs. The diverse types solutions using MDCs along with their life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) economic analysis studied later. Finally, limitations areas improvement, prospects, applications this technology are discussed. Due great advantages MDCs, improving design, building materials, efficiency, throughput will offer them significant alternative current technologies.
